Wildland Fuels Reduction

The Wildland Fuels Reduction Program was established in the summer of 2006 to assist homeowners within the wildland urban interface communities of Carson City to provide for defensible space on their property. Creating defensible space is a key element critical to reducing the threat and effects of a wildland fire. To learn more about the wildland fire danger in your area, and what you can do to increase the safety of your property, contact Carson City Fire Department at (775) 887-2210. If you are located within the wildland urban interface you may qualify for a dumpster or trailer to haul away the dead vegetation. Search your address using MapGeo to determine your location, if you are located outside the GREEN line you can reserve a trailer or dumpster at no cost. Trailers and dumpsters are provided at no cost through grants obtained from the Bureau of Land Management. |
The purpose is strictly for disposal of "vegetative waste" or "yard debris/refuse" - plants that grow on the property. Construction materials, manmade materials & bags are not allowed. Do not place the waste in the trailer/dumpster in bags. Pine needles are allowed, but you must limit the amount of dirt. Please do not load the trailer/dumpster using a backhoe. Too much dirt can make the equipment too heavy to transport and the driver may be forced to dump the load back onto the property.
- Size of Trailers: 7’ (W) x 12’ (L) x 8’ (D)
- Size Dumpster: 22 cubic yards
- Trailers are delivered/picked up every Monday, Wednesday or Friday.
- Dumpsters are delivered every Thursday and picked up every Monday.
Reduce The Amount of Fuel Immediately Surrounding Your Home
The fire safety goal of landscaping and maintenance is very simple. Reduce the amount of fuel immediately surrounding your home. This does not mean your property has to be barren. Some plants are more fire resistive than others. One of the most important things a homeowner can do is to create a safety zone or fire break around the house using these fire resistive plants.
Size of Your Safety Zone
In most areas, a safety zone should be cleared away from your home for a distance of no less than 30 feet.
As the slope of the lot increases, additional clearance as far as 100 feet may be necessary.
Keep Your Roof Clear
Remember to sweep your gutters, eaves ,and roof on a regular basis, especially during the hot dry weather of the fire season. Tinder dry leaves, needles and Cedar needles are a fire waiting to happen.
Stack Firewood Well Away From Your Home
Stack your firewood well away from anything that's combustible, including fences and outbuildings.
